#219. CD Collection from Ol’ Yeller and kin

We’re thrilled to welcome Ol’ Yeller back as our Maskenball band this year. Fans new and old will love this collection of CDs from the band and its members’ various incarnations and other projects, both past and current.

About Ol’ Yeller: “In 1981 Rich Mattson wrote his first song. It was such a great time that he still does it today. In 2000 he started Ol’ Yeller after dismantling the Glenrustles (Minneapolis, 1988-1999). Ol’ Yeller plays at clubs and stranger places. They record and release their own albums. Their recordings are lush and pretty and soaking with buttery guitars. Live, they rock like there is no tomorrow.” — From www.myspace.com/olyeller. Ol’ Yeller is: Rich Mattson, guitars and vocals; Andy Schultz, guitar and vocals; Greg McAloon, bass; and Ryan Otte, drums.

The collection includes nine albums:

1. Ol’ Yeller - Good Luck (2005). Awarded Best Rock Album by the Minnesota Music Academy, 2006.

2. Ol’ Yeller - Sounder (2004)

3. Ol’ Yeller - Nuzzle (2002)

4. Betty Drake - Grape or Red (2003). Andy Schultz and Paul Novak’s pop-rock masterpiece.

5. The Glenrustles - Fire at Night (1997). Roots rock at its best, Mattson’s first band, the Glenrustles, was Minneapolis’s beloved mainstay for twelve years and four critically acclaimed albums. Fire at Night was the band’s third release.

6. The Glenrustles - In Stone (1996). “The second album by the nine-year-old rootsy rock band the Glenrustles … may be a landmark album for anyone who identifies with the joys and sorrows of local artistic-outlaw culture and great modern rock songwriting in general.” — Jim Meyer, Star Tribune - 08/23/96.

7. Rich Mattson - Inspiral Notebooks (2006). Ol’ Yeller’s bandleader releases home recordings, 4-track and plays most everything on this experimental release.

8. The Tisdales - Bakers Dozen (2008). This is the debut release from Rich Mattson’s latest band, the Tisdales, whose members include Tony Derrick, Jason “Kokes” Kokal and Derek Rolando. “Beholden to no genre or scene, the Iron Range rocker is back with the Tisdales… Mattson’s songwriting chops are second to none, and his simple but majestic guitar solos are the stuff of Neil Young-garage-rock fantasies. His songs come with a layer of dirt already crusted in the space between notes—the way a bar band should sound.” — Robert Longmore, the Citypages A-listing for the Tisdales CD release party, 10/8/08.

9. The Bitter Spills - Folk Song Favorites (2008). This volume features recordings by the inimitable marauders of Folk Music known as the Bitter Spills. The Bitter Spills consist of Baby Grant Johnson and Rich Mattson playing traditional folksongs and original compositions, presented in the storied folk tradition.
