Twin Cities German Immersion School Parent-Teacher Organization

Fostering the relationship between school, home and community for the success of every TCGIS student

The Classroom Support Committee is responsible for recruiting and training Elternkontakt from each class during every school year; coordinating volunteers for school-wide events as requested by the teachers and the administration; coordinating staff appreciation programs and activities; providing assistance with cultural differences in areas such as the celebration of holidays, and otherwise facilitating communication between classroom teachers and parents.  The Committee also developed a Foreign Teacher Acclimation Manual to help our new teachers from overseas.

About Elternkontakt (EK):

The Elternkontakt's job is to serve as a point of communication between the teacher and the parents of your child's classmates; recruit parents to serve as chaperones for field trips or to help out with class projects; coordinate parent response to the teacher's special requests for materials or help; organize potlucks or other social events for your class; coordinate class gifts. EKs are encouraged to attend PTO meetings or otherwise stay current on PTO activities on behalf of the class.

The Classroom Support Committee has put together an Elternkontakt Handbook for teachers and EK and will provide training and support to the EKs throughout the year.  We would like to have at least one parent volunteer to be the EK for his or her child's classroom or for one or all of the specialty teachers.  Start thinking now about whether you would like to volunteer to be a classroom parent in the 2011-12 school year! You will have an opportunity to sign up in the week before school starts.
